Cities are the driving force of global economic growth and home to almost half of the world’s population. 

The 2018 International Business Festival’s Urbanisation and Cities Day examined the considerable leadership and governance challenges that must be overcome if cities are to fulfill their potential as engines for growth. 

The event explored how to find stability and opportunity in a changing world and showcased international market opportunities. Delegates met with future partners and buyers to develop profitable, meaningful relationships.

    Professor Michael Parkinson CBE is Associate Pro Vice Chancellor for civic engagement at the University of Liverpool. He has acted as adviser on urban affairs to the European Commission, the European Parliament, OECD, EUROCITIES, the Department of Communities and Local Government, the National Audit Office, the House of Commons Select Committees, the Core Cities and a range of cities in the UK and Europe. 

    Michael is a highly-respected voice in modern urban regeneration and will lead an engrossing and informed debate.

    In a conversation moderated by University of Liverpool Vice Chancellor Professor Janet Beer, Mayor of London Sadiq Khan and Liverpool City Region Metro Mayor Steve Rotheram will talk about the challenge of leading a 21st century city and their vision for future economic growth and inclusive development.

    Sadiq Khan is Mayor of London. Elected in 2016, he is the city’s first Muslim mayor. He is a former cabinet minister and leader of the Labour party’s 2015 general election campaign in London.

    Steve Rotheram is the first ever Metro Mayor of the Liverpool City Region, elected in 2017. He is a former Liverpool City Councillor and Lord Mayor and served as Labour member of parliament for the Liverpool Walton constituency from 2010-2017.

Beatriz’s experience in city regeneration through culture and sport makes her a true authority on the subject and the results of her work are consistently used as a benchmark for success.
